Do you need an interior architect? Five questions

Interior design and interior architecture are often sold as the same service, and for a straightforward refurbishment they overlap almost entirely. But where the building itself has to change, the difference matters — and appointing the wrong scope is an expensive way to find out. These five questions usually settle it.

1. Are you moving any walls?

If the answer is yes, the plan is the project. Someone has to survey the structure, understand what is load-bearing, and coordinate a structural engineer. Choosing finishes for a plan that has not been resolved is work you will do twice.

2. Is the room dark, and is that fixable?

Adding light usually means changing the building — a window, a rooflight, a removed partition. If daylight is the actual complaint, decoration will not solve it, and no amount of pale paint will.

3. Is there joinery doing structural or servicing work?

Full-height cabinetry that conceals a boiler, a stair, or a steel is not furniture. It has to be drawn against the building, not chosen from a catalogue.

4. Does the building have consents attached?

Listed status, conservation area, or a lease that restricts alterations all change what is possible before any design begins. Finding this out after concept stage is a common and costly sequence.

5. How many trades will be on site?

Beyond three or four, someone needs to be coordinating them against drawings. That coordination is the service, and its absence is what most people experience as a chaotic build.

If you answered yes to one of these, the scope is architectural. If you answered no to all five, a decoration and FF&E engagement will serve you better and cost considerably less.
